The market day

Bitcoin spent July 31 going nowhere, parked at $64,037.80 with a 24-hour change of essentially zero. Ether slipped a modest 0.72%, the kind of drift that barely registers on a chart but tells you traders weren't picking a side.

The headline calm hides some churn underneath. Out of the 100 coins in our sample, 54 were down and only 43 were up, so the broad market leaned red even as the two biggest names stayed put. That's a market grinding sideways rather than one at rest.

The extremes told the real story today. Decred jumped 15.2%, the day's biggest mover by far, while LayerZero's token dropped 6.6% to sit at the bottom of the pile. Big bitcoin, small moves at the edges: that's the shape of July 31.

Why is crypto down today? · July 31, 2026

Crypto isn't actually down today. Bitcoin is flat at $64,037.80 with a 0% 24-hour change, and while ether dipped 0.72%, that's a small move, not a selloff.

What people usually mean when they search this is the broader market breadth, and today that part does look weak: 54 of the 100 coins we track fell versus 43 that rose. So even with bitcoin steady, more altcoins lost ground than gained it.

On the days that do turn into real down days, the usual triggers are leveraged positions getting flushed out, a risk-off move in stocks spilling into crypto, or a single large token dragging sentiment lower, the way LayerZero's 6.6% drop stood out today.

Right now none of that is driving a market-wide decline. It's a flat bitcoin day with soft breadth underneath, not a crash.

Why is crypto up today? · July 31, 2026

Crypto isn't broadly up today either. Bitcoin is flat at $64,037.80, unchanged on the day, and ether is down slightly at -0.72%. This is a sideways market, not a rally.

If you're seeing green somewhere, it's likely isolated. Decred gained 15.2% today, the standout mover in either direction, but that's one coin, not a market-wide trend. Broader breadth actually skewed negative, with 54 of 100 coins down versus 43 up.

On real up days, the drivers tend to be renewed buying pressure in bitcoin that lifts the rest of the market with it, short positions getting squeezed, or a specific catalyst around a single token or sector.

Today's action doesn't fit that pattern. It's a flat, quiet session with one big gainer and a market that leaned slightly down overall.

Coldcard seed flaw drains $38M in the first sweep

A firmware bug dating to March 2021 sent Coldcard seed generation to a software random-number generator instead of the chip's hardware one, so seeds could be rebuilt without ever touching the device. The first sweep on 30 July took about 594 BTC, roughly $38M. Coinkite published an advisory the same day.

The prediction angle: Cold storage was the one part of bitcoin nobody was pricing as a risk, so watch for two opposite pulls on direction: forced selling by drained holders, and money rotating out of self-custody into ETFs and exchanges. Neither showed up in today's tape, which sat flat.
